COMPETITION ENTERPRISE 2008

DEVON AND SOMERSET GLIDING CLUB – NORTH HILL

Saturday 5th July to Saturday 12th July inclusive

(13th July is the traditional Fly Home Task!!)

 Competition Enterprise is coming home!!

In 1974, as an antidote to the growing restrictions of competition flying, Philip Wills created Competition Enterprise and gave John Fielden the task of nurturing and bringing it to the soaring public.  John’s innovative task setting (including the origin of current day BGA POST tasks) of maximising the day, weather, pilot skill and perspicacity are the ‘norm’ for Enterprise. Handicaps are based on the current B.G.A. speed indices.

Previous Enterprises at North Hill have seen pilots soaring along the cliffs and on one particular occasion out to sea as well as the more usual ridge, thermal, convergence, wave and sea breeze opportunities.  It is hoped that there will be the chance for many hours of enterprising soaring. We have picked the same week as previous ‘ 8 days out of 8’ Enterprise weeks and given reasonable luck, we feel confident of putting on an interesting and enjoyable week of Enterprising flying.

An integral part of Enterprise has become Justin Will’s daily de-brief of the previous day’s flying, allowing everyone to participate. This provides an excellent chance to share, learn and reflect on our skills.

  JOHN  FIELDEN
  JUNIOR  SCHOLARSHIP  2008

For many people John Fielden WAS Enterprise. From 1974, he successfully directed virtually every Enterprise up until his death in 2002. Aside from his innovative task setting, John’s own personal lasting legacy to Enterprise is the John Fielden Junior Scholarship. It was always his desire to encourage younger pilots to the Enterprise philosophy and indeed several Juniors have now experienced the competition (led by Andy Perkins  at North Hill in 2002). This legacy has made available the chance for 2 Junior Entrants to fly at Enterprise at minimal cost!

For more details on the scholarship and whether you might qualify, or do you know of a budding Junior pilot who might be interested, visit

Also welcome will be those who would like to taste the Enterprise experience but cannot make the whole week.
