Sadly once again the club was very quiet due to the poor forecast.
The lecture room was in use all day however as our next two basic instructor trainees were subjected to lectures from myself and Simon Leeson.
They then moved into the rather cold hangar to be taught the “Meet and Greet” which is a vital part of giving a first flight experience the best possible introduction into gliding.
Back in the clubhouse Rob and Sally Hender were very lucky to have two weather experts willing to teach them the required information for the SPL meteorological exams.
The log fire ensured the clubhouse was very cosy and at lunchtime the usual hungry bunnies arrived for some of Vicky’s delicious food.
Fun fact, any rock buns consumed on a non flying days now contain zero calories…
People drifted away about 4 pm, such a shame pilots requiring their theory never turn up when it is not going to be flyable.
You have to have the theory sometime people!
In the new year it is planned that we will a more structured approach to theory days, the subjects will be advertised the night before by any instructor willing to teach.
Learning about gliding and then putting it into practice when the weather is good??
What’s not to like!
Ps don’t forget the calorie free rock buns.

About Kevin Fairburn
I started my gliding journey in June 2021, when the instructors were ready to start flying again after the last Covid lockdown, and I flew my first solo in July 2022. Working my way through the badges and qualifications I passed my Bronze in March 2025 followed by my Cross Country Endorsement and qualified to apply for my SPL in June 2025.
Outside gliding, my main passion is music, and I spent the early part (and more recently too!) as a professional musician, playing the bass guitar.
