Saturday 24 October – Junior Expedition Long Mynd

Saturday the first day of the trip was one very gloomy start. We all arose out of our slumber at around 9 and set out a plan for the day which mainly consisted of spending time in the Long Mynd simulator getting used to the site.

Richard Lean decided to get his rc glider out and decided to try out the ridge with a very brisk south west wind. Sadly, this was shortlived as a huge amount of rain came to bring it all to a halt. All of the juniors then migrated back to the sim for some more launch failure practice at the Mynd.

Some went to Ludlow for a little top up on some rations. We then planned for an SPL quiz for the afternoon. Well done to Arthur Hier and Charlie Fabb for their perfect score!

Sadly this was short lived as Mark then handed over to some of the juniors to hold their own presentations. We had Kai Mudd do a very interesting talk on air brakes for 10 minutes followed by Adam Smyth on his talk on the total energy probe.

Some possibly questionable drawings of gliders then marked an end to our talk and call for dinner time. The stormy weather had then began to grow even more which lead to more fun for the juniors in the sim. It was a productive day from such a poor conditions to greet us. Tomorrow looks to be flyable with some possibly sporty conditions. – Adam Smyth
