Thursday 5 February

My call to arms was answered by a few members today – but not many.
There was a list of jobs that needed doing, a Gliding Club does not run by itself and relies on members contributing to day to day maintenance and general housekeeping. – The first job was to bring the remaining wet logs into the clubhouse and stack them for use in the logburner when they dry out.

Thank you to the crew that worked in the rain to erect the sign at the west end, to replace the one that got damaged in the recent storms.

The main task was to tidy the bottom hangar, gliding clubs seem to attract all manner of junk over the years, some members kindly bring their unwanted “stuff” to the club thinking we might find a use for it! – For instance, a lovely small statue of Margret Thatcher, old kettles, 1950’s style stereos and large box’s of very rusty nuts and bolts, so rusty they are stuck together, never mind, they may come in useful one day…….
Luckily the refuse lorry arrived first thing and emptied the bin so we had somewhere to store these valuable items, I particularly liked the four empty sealant cartridges which were stacked neatly on the shelf, they were empty of course but no doubt will come in useful in the future!

Once the hangar was completely emptied we could brush the floor and clear out any unwanted large items, hooks were fitted for the spare strops and shelves were tidied, a huge improvement.
JB was at hand to make sure any rusty bits of metal from ancient gliders not seen for 50 years were carefully stored “just in case”.

Paul Medlock driving the tractor with the help of a ground crew moved the four log containers into the spare trailer slot in the trailer store, this will be our supply for next winter.

There were quite a few members supporting Vicky lunchtime and several members of the public, we were treated to Spanish chicken, delicious!

On Saturday we plan to attack the main glider hangar and possibly the vehicle workshop.
(If anyone has any broken items, like microwave ovens or statues of famous people that are cluttering your house, please bring them up, I’m sure we can store them somewhere for future use…….)

Hope to see you Saturday for another fun filled day! – Mark Courtney
