Another rush to the grid at 8:30am, with all three of the North Hill gliders in the back half of the grid. But they were quite pleased with this as it looked like a blue day ahead, so others could mark the lift available.
Briefing at 10:00am…. So today’s task is called ‘A Day with the Yorkshire Horses’. The competitors have to visit the listed racecourses in Yorkshire to get bonus points. Looks like a hot blue day!
The sniffer went at 11:30am but reported broken lift, went again at 12:00 with better results.
So the first launch was at about 12:30. JZK (Dan and I) launched at 1:15pm and headed south east to Beverley, but forgo the 10pts for the turn point to get to the Humber and get the sea crossing points. Got to the bridge at about 2000ft, managed to gain some height to cross, then hit 5 knots in the middle of the river! Struggled to the south, got to Doncaster with masses of sink, and at 984ft I decided I wasn’t so keen to experience a field landing after all. Dan managed to scratch away, and in doing so hit the a Doncaster turn point! We then headed back towards Rufforth, deciding against trying for the northerly turn points! 200km in just over 3 hours.

Really frustrating day to be in the Eagle. Didn’t have the performance for the sea crossing earlier in the day, generally struggled all day in tricky blue and strong winds.
Managed to rack up a little under 200kms and a few TPs, so hopefully isn’t a huge disaster, but I’m sure the people behind will get closer to me in the overalls. They landed out just 25 minutes from the airfield, which meant another fairly easy retrieve.
DD3: (Phil and Gill Morrison) headed south and managed to achieve the Beverley turn point which so many others missed, then headed back gaining OLC points, and putting the kettle on for the rest of us.
Another great day, hard work, but worth it. Italian restaurant booked for this evening! – Sally Hender
