Saturday 24 January

Although the forecast was a bit poor! James Flory had offered to do some ground school and we “DO“ have a very good simulator setup. This resulted in a few members arriving to start the day off with optimism. They were soon involved in virtual flying and other gliding- related activities. This early group were then added to by our CFI Mark Courtney assisted by Simon Leeson and Dave Weeks in full wet weather gear, pressure-washing the hangar apron, a job well done but they did look a bit wet after. I believe they enjoyed the woodburner stove heating the clubhouse after?

In the Evening, the club hosted the latest BGA Part 66L roadshow hosted by Dominic Newton. This was to explain the latest position with regard to how to become a Glider inspector (significantly affected by EASA rules) . It was very well attended with 24 of us to listen and take part, with others from the southwest gliding community attending as well, friends old and new!). We even combined to take an example of one of the exams (human factors) and managed to get what would be a pass mark. This and the presentation given, was very helpful in giving us both the information necessary, and so be confident of starting the process to become inspectors. With a better understanding of the learning required – while the process does require a few years work and some cost, it shows that as a club we hopefully have a method of replenishing the Excellent inspector team we are very lucky to have at the moment.

Another great meal from Vicky at North Hill cafe (James Hood)

Following the end of the Roadshow, a rapid change of Clubhouse layout allowed the course attendees and a few others to sit down to another one of Vicky’s excellent roast dinners (thanks Vicky) followed by a pudding. So, although it was not a flyable day we did achieve things and improve our gliding related skills. – Gordon Hutchinson
