Monday 26 October – Junior Expedition Long Mynd

The forecast cloudbase confirmed that Monday would be the third consecutive non-flying day of the trip, but nevertheless we made the most of it. The plan was to go to the RAF museum at Cosford (much to the CFI’s dismay, who described it as like ‘watching a load of dead animals’).

After getting fed by the wonderful Helen, we piled into various vehicles to navigate ranging road closures, and penetrate some new potholes. Eventually, we make it down off the Mynd.

The Cosford museum was surprisingly good. Favourites included the V-Bombers, TSR2, EAP and lightning. Mark Courtney finished the exhibition in a record time of 19 minutes to go and slouch in the cafe.

Excitingly, we stopped off in Shrewsbury to stock up on some supplies on the way back.

The juniors had the innovative idea to purchase a couple of foam chuck gliders from the gift shop (£6 each, not a bad deal), which were subsequently modified, complete with winglets, T-tail and ballast. They were optimistically thrown off the Mynd in a solid 20kt westerly and flew for one minute, more than quadrupling the total flight time of the trip.

We got to bed early (ish) as conditions were finally looking promising for tomorrow! – Arthur Lean
