The day started with poor visibility, a little drizzle, and a low cloud base. Nevertheless, we got the gliders out of the hangar and DI’d them before the daily briefing.
As conditions had still not improved, the decision was made to replace one of the winch ropes while we waited for the weather to lift. Mike Sloggett also led a winch launch briefing. By 12:30, the gliders and launch control were set up at the north-eastern end of the airfield and ready to go. Soon afterwards, the weather began to improve and the gliders finally took to the air.
There was some thermal activity around the ridge, although it was not exceptional. Most flights lasted between 20 and 30 minutes, while the longest flight of the day was 56 minutes in the Junior. Despite the slow start, it turned into a worthwhile day, with some enjoyable flying achieved once the conditions finally improved. – Sam Wynn (new Junior member and first time blogger)
