Tuesday 27 October – Junior Expedition Long Mynd

At the start of the day we were up bright and early to rig the DG-505 and the day started with high hopes for a reasonable ridge day at the Long Mynd. After a quick briefing it was decided that we would do southerly launches, this was later changed to a short west.

After carefully unpacking the labyrinth of a hangar we took the gliders over to the far north-easterly side of the Mynd. and at 10:55 the first launch commenced.

Flights were often able to stay up for over 20 minutes before being called down, so everyone had the chance to fly.
As the day progressed, showers became more frequent. But everyone’s efforts on the field meant that we could dry off the gliders and get flying quickly.

All flights were soarable with pilots being called down after 30 mins to give others a go.

At 3:30 the strong reliable wind that was consistent all day started to die down and move towards the south. The decision was made to change launch directions but because of the limited daylight left it was decided we would pack up.

Once the gliders had been carefully packed in the hangar, it was time for a nice evening meal (lasagne).

Overall a great first flyable day at the Midlands Gliding Club. – Kai Mudd
